At present, about 8,000 members of Jemez Pueblo do not have access to high-speed internet, which could be enhanced through a new fiber-optic project. With the assistance of a state grant, Jemez Pueblo plans to install this network as part of an initiative and train students and tribal members in its construction and installation.
Sandeep Taxali, an advisor with the New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion, noted that this grant will enable Pueblo de Los Pinos to expand its wireless network coverage to more homes. Furthermore, Taxali noted that this project would create jobs – both IT-related ones as well as mechanic jobs needed for connecting fiber cables into households – with employment opportunities increasing as a result of this project.
As states struggle with budget issues, some communities have turned to local broadband companies as a solution. One such family was that of Nuckolls; their family-owned business has become one of the go-to options in rural communities for services spanning 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. It employs over 700 workers.
This year will likely witness several high-profile projects coming to completion, some long in the making such as one supported by ballot measure funding that has been years in development.
